“Skin Cancer” is a serious illness and one of the scariest diagnoses that anyone will ever hear from their doctor! During the screening, we check the skin for such things as birthmarks, growths, moles, and other blemishes or spots. We look for unusual sizes, shapes, textures, or colors. By looking for these features we can help to detect and diagnose Melanoma.
The two most common types of skin cancer are Basal Cell (BCC) and Squamous Cell (SCC).
Once the skin is examined and an unusual growth is found, a biopsy will be taken to determine if it is cancerous and what type of cancer it could be. Once a diagnosis of cancer is given, we will develop an individualized plan for treating it.
Skin Cancer Screening and Treatment
Some Treatment of Precancerous Lesions can include:
- Freezing: We may destroy actinic keratoses and some small, early skin cancers by freezing them with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery)
- Photodynamic Therapy: with this therapy, we use a drug, called a photosensitizing agent, along with a particular type of light. These photosensitizers are exposed to a specific wavelength of light, which produces oxygen that kills the nearby cells.
- Chemotherapy: This method is a powerful drug that is used to kill that fast-growing cancer cells
