As described in our Skin Growth Page, Moles are common among most people as they age. In most cases, moles are benign. Moles are small dark brown spots some of which may change in appearance or even fade over time.
One thing about Moles is certain…they can be ugly and can appear in the most inopportune places. If you have a Mole(s) and are concerned or they make you feel bad about yourself – visit to our office and we will identify what type of mole(s) you have and then develop a plan to remove them.
Usually, Moles do not need to be removed! We recommend that you take note of the moles on your body and begin to check the size, color, and if they grow. A change in any of these characteristics may indicate an issue, so you should have them checked! If the mole has to be removed, there are typically two ways that we do it:
- Surgical Shave: We will numb the area around the mole and then use a blade to shave off sections of the mole. With this process no stitches are required. It will be tested for cancer.
- Surgical Excision: We numb the area around the mole, we then will cut out the mole and stitch or suture the area closed. Depending on the type of mole we may biopsy it to make sure it is not cancerous.
Remember, removing a mole is simple and an in-office procedure! If you have one, you have choices, however, if it has not changed in shape, color, or size….leave it alone.
